 Dinner around the campfire
« Thread Started on Aug 9, 2009, 3:48pm »

The night was quiet and the only sounds were those of the crickets and the crackling of a small fire. The barren area that Brulo had set camp in was rather dark despite the cheerfully burning fire. A make-shift spit had been set up over the fire, several small lizards cooked slowly on the spit. The smell of the cooking meat filled the area around the camp. Some small predators sniffed the air curious about the smell of meat.

However the large form of Brulo prevented them from coming any nearer. Brulo grumbled quietly to himself as he sat near the edge of the campfire. It'd been a long time since he'd had a filling meal even longer since having a decently made one. At the very least these lizards would keep him tided over till he found more food. Brulo still wore his armor and kept his weapons within reach, while all seemed calm he knew that during these times of quiet things could turn quite ugly very quickly.

Brulo leaned forward and rotated the make-shift spit to make sure he got the meat cooked all of the way through. Afterwards Brulo leaned back and basked in the warmth given off by the fire. Brulo let out a loud yawn followed by a short, low-pitched grunt, he was growing tired and would probably get some rest after his meal. As he waited Brulo's mind wandered to the thing that caused this pitiful existence. The lack of work he'd been finding was really becoming a concern.

As Brulo debated the pros and cons of joining a mercenary group again he was snapped back to reality by the smell of burning meat. Brulo quickly pulled the stick, that made up the main peice of the spit, off of the fire. Brulo gave the meat a quick sniff, the meat was burnt but at least it was still edible. Brulo pulled one of the lizards off of the spit and popped it in his mouth, the meat was hot probably hot enough to burn the mouth of most people, however it didn't bother Brulo much.

Brulo was running in a wasteland, very simmilar to the one he'd been in the night before. He had a demoness with him and he was sheilding her from some enemy he'd had yet to see, the demoness was pregnant and as such wasn't moving very quickly. Suddenly he would see it or more aptly he would feel it, he'd turn his head and there it'd be a large monstorus being, he couldn't make out it's features for the monster was radiating a bright light. Brulo could see the futility in the efforts to escape

"Run and don't you dare look back", Brulo yelled to the demoness as he turned to face the creature. Brulo knew he wouldn't survive an encounter with such a creature, yet his Orcish warriors pride prevented him from turning tail. As the monster approched Brulo he reached for his axes, but they were not there, Brulo could not concieve why he'd not brought his axes. Yet it was no matter against a creature like this the weapon he used would be no matter so he lifted his fists. His spiked armor could cause some damage at least, but his hands were unarmored.

Brulo was astonished these were not his hands they had a greenish tint and a full cast of fingers. Brulo was left with nothing to defend himself other than bare hand and foot to fight this monster off with. A loud, fierce filled roar came from Brulo as if trying to turn back the beast with just the ferocitry of his roar alone. The roar was spawned from fear for his life and anger from his inabilty to avert this destruction. Brulo rushed the creature filled with the full strength and ferocity of his being.

As he neared the creature the light became brighter filling all of his senses. He was almost to it and then he felt a strange warmth exuding from the creature. It was at this moment Brulo awoke swinging his axe at the creature that was no longer there. Brulo blinked dumbly in the light of a new days sun, it was very early into the morning. Brulo let out a loud yawn and reached into his pouch as pulling out a whetstone. Brulo began sharpening his axes in an attempt to distract hismelf.

It was the same dream almost every night, Brulo didn't know what the dream spawned from. The creature in the dream struck a deep, unrational fear into Brulo. He didn't know where he knew it from but the monserous being seemed fammilar. Brulo couldn't place it though he'd never encountered anything like it before, maybe he'd heard of such a creature in the tales of some adventurer. Brulo rose to his feat gathering up his few meager belongings.

Brulo looked around at the wasteland area he was in now. He was trying to figure out where to head next, his searches in Keno had turned up nothing. Brulo sighed and looked around once more, he'd remember hearing something about a city of criminals somewhere to the east. If Brulo learned anything in his few years was that criminals always had information even if they were however reluctant to part with it. Brulo was decided he would head to this city of criminals as the next stop on his journey for information. Not knowing how exactly to get there however Brulo took of towards Isla, someone there would know how to get there.

 Reaching Isla

The sun was high in the sky scroching the land beneath it, the ground was cracked and crumbling. A small lizard skittered across the dried ground, diving into a small hole a few feet away. The entire area looked like a desert everything was dead, dying or otherwise hiding from the sun. Brulo wiped the sweat from his brow he didn't get it, this much heat and it was only mid Annix. Brulo was growing weary of all this heat, because of it he was finding less and less food which did little to help his mood. Brulo let out a loud roar of anger, it had been three days he should have been to Isla by now.

"WHERE AM I?" Brulo yelled out his anger finally getting the better of him. His voice was hoarse from having to ration his water, the agitation was more then evident in his voice. He didn't know how much more of this he could take, if he wasn't within sight of Isla by night he was going to give up. However Brulo knew that such a claim was unreasonable, even if he did give up on finding information in Isla it wasn't realistic on giving up on finding Isla altogether.

If Brulo was heading in anywhere near the right direction Isla would have to be the nearest civilization. Brulo could go on with limited food but the ammount of water he had even with his severe rationing wouldn't last him another three days. Brulo roared again, however this time he heard a response, the frightened yelps of a small group of people to his east. Seeing them Brulo was relived maybe they could give him proper directions or at the very least let him buy some supplies with the coin he'd saved from his last mission.

"Hey you, guys over there. Wait a moment I need to speak to you" Brulo called out trying to sound as harmless as possible. However his already deep voice wasn't helped by the fact that his voice was hoarse from little water. The people were heavily frightened by Brulo approaching them yet they seemed more afraid of disobeying him. When Brulo had gotten within ten yards of the group one of them stepped up with a spear finally getting some nerve.

"St.. step back Demon. I will defend my freinds against you if I must", the man's voice warbled and even from this distance Brulo could see him shaking.

"I'm an Orc and I mean you no harm. I merely wish to speak to you", Brulo called back to the man without even breaking his stride. As he approached Brulo let out a sigh of relief, the group looked like a supply caravan this was Brulo's lucky day.

"Don't look like no Orc I've ever seen", the man called called back to Brulo entering a more combat ready stance. Brulo continued forward undaunted by the man's preperation for violence. The man rushed at Brulo stabbing out with his spear, Brulo simply sidestepped easily dodging the man's linear attack, Brulo then quickly swung downward snapping the haft of the spear.

"I said I meant you no harm. Don't make me change my mind", Brulo whispered to the man his eyes flashing with anger. Brulo's voice was quiet but the implied threat was quite clear. The man shirked back from Brulo's gaze and slowly began backstepping towards the caravan. Brulo followed matching the man step for step, the rest of the caravan cringed back as he neared. One man in the caraven had a sword belted at his waist, but it was obvious both from the incident earlier and the swordman's resigned demeanor, that he did not plan to fight.

"I only wish for two things from you. First off I would like to know the direction of Isla. Secondly I would like to know if you could by some supplies from your caravan", Brulo said showing that he was making a demand and not a request. The members of the caravan looked nervously between each other unsure of what to do. Brulo jingled the small bag of gold peices that he had to show he planned to pay for the services.

"They don't wish to deal with you, Demon. It is quite obvious you are an Orc like you claim, you are far to well-spoken", said the swordsman, picking the inside of his ear with the pinky of his left hand. Brulo eyed the man, he wasn't a very tall man most likely under even six feet of height, he was also rather wirey. What filled the man wasn't resignation but more like disinterest, this intrigued Brulo this mere swordsman held no fear of him.

"I am an Orc, whether you belive it or not is it up to you. However refusing to do buisness with me would be most", Brulo paused thinking of the right word. "Most unpleasent for you and your people", Brulo finally added deciding that it was the best way to get his message across without making a direct threat. He didn't think that he'd be able to intimidate the swordsman however

"I'd like to see you try something, Demon", the swordsman scoffed. The rest of the people in the caravan seemed to get a newfound confidence from the swordman's defiance. Brulo let out a low growl, the people of the caravan shirked back, the swordsman however stood his ground his hand now resting on the hilt of the sword.

"Maybe if I bash you the rest of your people will see the futility of resisting me?" Brulo asked not even atempting to try and veil his threats anymore. Brulo glared at the swordsman as he waited for some kind of response from the swordsman. The swordsman's only response was to close his eyes let out a sigh, and draw his sword. The sword was of a make Brulo hadn't seen before it one sharp edge, the other was flat giving the sword a triangular apearance.

Brulo didn't even bother to draw either of his axes, the swordsman opened his eys and rushed at Brulo. The swordsman was fast, Brulo hardly had time to block, Brulo had hardly gotten time to get his armored glove up to block. The blade was sunken halfway through one of the metallic horns on Brulo's left glove. The man was excruciatingly fast, however his blade was now stuck into Brulo's glove.Brulo gave a toothy almost evil smile he raised the his right hand as the man looked up at him.

Brulo took a back handed swing at the swordsman's face, the gloved hand just swished through the air. Brulo blinked dumbly, the sword was till stuck in Brulo's left glove, however the swordsman was almost two yards away. He was in a low crouched position, the fingers of his left hand touching the dirt. A small trail of dust was rising up between the point where the swordsman had been and where he was now.

Brulo didn't know how the man had done it his eyes hadn't been able to follow the movement. One moment the swordsman had been standing in front of Brulo, his hands on the sword sunken into his glove. The next moment he was almost two yards away his hand in the dirt.

"How'd you do that?" Brulo asked as he regained his composure. However the man just stared, obviously showing that he wasn't going to answer. Brulo pulled one of his axes from his back taking it in his left hand he then used his right hand to pull the sword out of his left glove. Brulo tossed the sword back to the swordsman, and then quickly pulled his second axe out.

The swordsman deftly caught the blade, he was back on his feet, the swordsman dropped into a low stance and resheathed his sword keeping his hand on the blade. Brulo cracked his brow but didn't say anything. Brulo took after the man as fast as he could trying to suprise the swordsman in whatever he was doing. However Brulo knew that he wouldn't be able to move faster then the swordsman, he was relying on his experience to get him through whatever the swordsman was planning.

As Brulo neared striking distance the swordsman seemed to vanish completly for a moment. Then he heard it the clang of metal on metal. Brulo looked down, the swordsman looked shocked his sword was partially into Brulo's metal leggings on Brulo's right leg. Brulo smiled again, the weapon and style the swordsman was using was obviously very powerful but it just didn't stand up to Brulo's armor. Kicked the man away from him using his left foot, the swordsman seemed to shocked to try and dodge.

The swordsman tumbled backward and came to a halt a yard away crumpled in a heap. Brulo pulled out the sword and looked at the damage, the sword had cut the armor and he would have to get some repairs done when he got to Isla. He grumbled quietly and bent the tip of the sword and tossed it back to the swordsman. The man caught it but still had a look of shock and suprise on his face. "Now would you and your people like to do buisness or should I continue?" Brulo said fully intending to raid the caravan if need be.

"No, no that's okay. What do you need?" Yelled out one of the caravaners the fear in his voice evident. After negotiations began the sale took only a few moments to conclude the sale. With enough food to last him about a week if need be Brulo set off in the direction that the caravan had pointed him. They told him that the trip should only take a day and a half, but it was back in the direction he had come. So with a sigh Brulo hefted the new pack filled with supplies and headed off towards Isla again.
