Continuing “The key”.
The following night was darker. Melzois entered Etoña’s graveyard. An hidden hogshead was among the coffins, not entirely buried; its bung hole was uncovered; there was a man inside. He kneeled. “Missed me?” “Please, let me go…” whispered the cobbler. He was in pain, violent pain; pain he never felt before. No more tears were left. “…I don’t want to die.” “You will die. We already talked about it…” Each of his buttocks had a deep blade wound. His hands were pierced. There was a rat inside with him. “…you want me to end your misery? No problem, I will kill you…” His toes were bitten. His cheeks were cut. “…no more suffering, you’ll see your wife again…” He had bruises everywhere. He could hardly move. “…all you have to do is tellme the truth.” “I already told you…” Speaking was difficult. “…the key isn’t mine. He lives in Maalish. That’s the one who paid…” “No he’s not. I met him. You know they also have nice graveyards in Maalish?" “My daughter… please… she had a son last month.” “There are at least three golden keys. I have two… I need the last one. This person who wants the keys back – who is he?” “I know nothing…” “Where were you going to meet him?”His tone was intimidating. The man tried to cry. “Have mercy...” “No. The keys have differences, which means each key is needed. Whatever is behind this three-lock door... I want it.” “Stop doing this to me…” “I know he threatened you. But, think about it: you don’t have any key to give him. Do you still think your daughter’s safe? Your only hope is me getting to him first.” “I’m begging you…” “It’s getting late. I have another business to take care of tonight.” He lied. “Looks like you’re spending another day here…” “Wait… No.” “Have a good night.”
Melzois entered the graveyard, the next night. There were no clouds in the sky. He kneeled, once again, by the hogshead. “Hello.” “You’re not going to free me, are you?” The man was a talking corpse. “No.” “Kill me…” “Give me his name…” “They call him Dofred… He offered money… Needed the key…” “Dofred, you say?” “Yes.” “Where is he?” “Traveler… Money whore, like you…” “He’s probably working for someone else… You know who?” “No... Kill me!” He picked a shovel… “With pleasure.”…and buried what was left. The cobbler closed his eyes. It took him ten minutes to die.
